In 1988, Gilda moved to the US with her husband, where they lived for 14 years. When they arrived in California, she became even more interested in sports. She founded the Oxumaré Raízes da Bahia Dance Company, which became very successful in the San Francisco Bay Area and even performed in other states and abroad.
Gilda’s background includes Congolese dance with the Ko-Thi Dance Company in Milwaukee under Ferne Caulker-Bronson, from Sierra Leone; Haitian dance under Valerie Watson and Blanche Brown; Congolese dance at San Francisco State University with Malonga Casquelourd, from Congo; with the Randy Johnson Company in Palo Alto; West African dance with Nana Yaw Koanteng, from Ghana; and African Cuban dance with Susan Arenas in Berkeley.
She has danced for years with Corpo Santo Dance and Capoeira Company, headed by Mestre Acordeon, one of the first capoeira masters in San Francisco, most recently in 2002 at UC Berkeley. Gilda, Mestre Acordeon, Mestre Rã, and Mestre Urubu have given many workshops and assemblies at middle schools and high schools all over the SF Bay Area. Another notable performance was in "People Like Me" at the Cowell Theater.
| Gilda has taught Afro Brazilian dance over the past 13 years to students of all ages at the following locations: 3rd Wave Dance Studio, Abadá Capoeira, Capoeira Arts Café, Noe Valley Ministry, and the SF Institute of Coreography. Of course, she has also performed in the San Francisco Carnival. Accompanied by her Oxumaré Dance Company, she participated in the Ethnic Dance Festival twice at San Francisco State University. |
Other physical education areas that Gilda has studied are tennis and badminton, soccer, volleyball, yoga ball, bodybuilding, body sculpting, aerobics, super circuit fitness training, boxercise, jiu-jitsu, modern dance, jazz, and ballet, all at City College of San Francisco. She earned her kickboxing certification from the International Sports Conditioning Association.
Additionally, Gilda is a certified massage therapist with over 12 years of experience in the Bay Area at Elisa’s Health Spa, the Nob Hill Club, and the San Francisco Tennis Club. This experience led to her interest in helping pregnant women with special massage techniques, exercises, yoga, and more.
On a visit to Bahia in 2001, Gilda met the champion boxer Popó’s family, who encouraged her to convert her garage to an academy, which she has today. She took boxing classes from Nilton and Paulo Freitas, and after taking the boxing instructor course given by Frederico Machado, the academy became affiliated with the boxing federation. Academia Xorokê’s staff consists of: Joilson Santana, trainer; Carlos Alberto, boxing instructor; Dr. Eduardo Brazão, orthopedist; Dra. Graça Ferreira Nunes, attorney; and Paul Dean, English instructor, all of whom are helping me with this project to benefit children in the community. This academy is dedicated to the memory of the late Maria Júlia Batista dos Santos, Gilda’s mother, and to the economically disadvantaged children of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Visando um futuro melhor para a comunidade, a Academia Xorokê foi fundada em 2001. No início, a única atividade era boxe, mas hoje estamos ampliando as atividades para incluir capoeira, boxercise, dance workout, yoga ball, e massagens para gestantes. Também vamos oferecer trabalho em grupo para as crianças e seus familiares, ingles, e muito mais para o futuro, com sua ajuda.
Gilda
Desde menina, Gilda pratica os esportes. Aprendeu capoeira aos 16 anos com os mestres Bimba, Pastinha, e Aristides. Estudou dança na UFBA, e estudou inglês na ACBEU. Em 1988 Gilda e seu marido, que é americano, saíram de Salvador para morar em San Francisco, na Califórnia, onde passaram os próximos14 anos. Nesse período Gilda se interessou mais ainda pelos esportes. Estudou dança na San Francisco State University e no City College of San Francisco. Na área de educação física estudou tênis, futebol, badminton, yoga, kickboxing (com certificado) , boxercise, e jiu-jitsu.
Gilda também se formou em massagem terapêutica pelo International School of Massage Therapy.
Ela ensinou dança Afro e fundou a companhia de dança Oxumaré Raízes da Bahia, a qual se apresentou por duas vezes no San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival. Gilda viajou para vários outros estados e países para apresentar seus espetáculos de dança.
De visita a Salvador em 2001, ela se interessou pelo boxe, através dos amigos, a família Freitas, e fundou a Academia Xorokê. Tomou curso com os professores Nilton e Paulo Freitas e com Frederico Machado, e depois se aliou à Confederação. Gilda passou mais um ano estudando nos Estados Unidos, e agora está de volta para dar continuação a este projeto.

O Professor Paul Dean é nativo dos Estados Unidos da América. Em 1974 começou a carreira de professor de inglês como idioma estrangeiro em Belo Horizonte, MG, onde ensinou no ICBEU. Transferiu-se para a ACBEU, em Salvador, BA, em 1976, onde lecionou durante 10 anos. Professor Paul Dean também ensinou inglês como segunda língua na Califórnia durante 13 anos, primeiro na CSU Hayward, e depois no City College of San Francisco. Alunos de mais de 50 paises diferentes já aprenderam inglês com Paul Dean. De volta agora à Bahia, ele dá aulas particulares para individuais e grupos. Ele também dá aulas de inglês grátis para crianças de alguns bairros populares de Salvador. (A idade mínima é nove anos.) "Essa é a minha maneira de agradecer aos brasileiros que me ajudaram logo que cheguei aqui." diz o professor. "Quero fazer a minha parte para que essas crianças tenham um futuro melhor.
